Apparently at some point Geddy Lee got tired of dealing with bass amplifiers and just started plugging his bass directly into the PA system.  This left him looking for something to stand in front of during  Rush concerts and, after experimenting with washer/dryer combos and old refrigerators, he settled on enormous, functional rotisserie chicken units.  Note the microphone.
